Dendrobium Orchid Restarted

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 03/15/18

I started the orchid painting over and like this look better, light and airy. A very dark background will make the flowers pop.

I added the first layer of background to help see where I was going with the orchids.

This should be fun! Dendrobium orchids up close.

Tropic Flame Done - Probably

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 03/05/18

I will let this painting sit for a week and then see if any touch ups are needed. I could have put in more leaf details but decided not to for fear of losing the light and airy effect.

Tropic Flame

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 03/02/18

More color and shadows are in for the main hibiscus. It will go redder, more or less. I have not decided yet. I like the leaves light and if I go too dark on the flower, I will have to go darker on the leaves.

Tropical Flame Moving Along

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/28/18

Started leaves on the left and put a few shadows on the leaves on the right. Will work on the main hibiscus which will include some shadows and go darker.

Tropical Flame Continued

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/26/18

I have added some darks for background contrast with the leaves and will continue on the left so that I can see where the shadows fall on the large hibiscus.

Tropical Flame - Adding a Bud

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/22/18

I am adding a bud and have added more leaves and a first layer of background on the right. Have not quite figured out the leaves on the left side. I will probably wait until the hibiscus is almost done.

Tropical Flame

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/19/18

I have started on the first layers of the leaves on the right and have a layer of yellow and orange on the hibiscus which will end up bright red-orange. The background will be very dark in the end.

'Tropical Flame' Red-Orange Hibiscus 18x24"

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/18/18

I have moved on from turtles and landscapes to a flaming red-orange hibiscus. I generally don't like to use masking fluid to save whites but in this case, it will be easier to use it to save the light colored veins of leaves in sunlight. That is what you are seeing here. There will probably be leaves added on the far left after the hibiscus is painted.

'Mahaulepu Beach' 16x20"

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/16/18

I like the impressionistic look of the vegetation in this painting.

The painting is probably done but I will revisit it in a week or so.

Mahaulepu

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/14/18

Will be moving on to the ocean and beach next. Still need to finish some of the vegetation and the beach house in the trees near the middle of the painting.

Back to Mahaulepu

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/12/18

Have been busy doing my taxes and other activities. Added more vegetation to this painting and hope to finish it this week.

Mahaulepu Painting Loosely

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/02/18

Loose layers for vegetation, mountain, hills and rock formation.

Mahaulepu Continued

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 02/01/18

I decided to finish off the rock formations and start the vegetation before going back to the ocean. This will help me to decide how much darker to paint the water.

Mahaulepu Ocean

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 01/29/18

Almost done with a head cold which made me dizzy to look down to paint the ripples in the waves. Here is a start. I am not using any masking fluid but am painting around the foam so it won't be the fastest process. The reef under the water is visible in some areas.  If you look very closely, you can also see the texture of the paper.

Mahaulepu Continued

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 01/12/18

I found time to start in on the rocks above the ocean.  This area of Poipu has red dirt. I really enjoyed painting the rocks!  The ocean will be more of a challenge. I will probably paint around the foam rather than use masking fluid.
