Starting the Leaves
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/16/16
I have 2-3 layers of different shades of green paint on these leaves. The edges on these and others in the painting have a liquid masking film to preserve the white edges. I will peel the mask off when the painting is almost complete. Just this much of the leaves took me 2-1/3 hours.
Plumerias in Paradise Flower Shadows
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/14/16
In case anyone is interested, it took me 8 hours to do these flower shadows. The painting is 21x28." I have always guessed in days or months, how long it took me to do a painting so I am excited to document the time.
Back to Watercolor Plumerias
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/11/16
I have started to put in the shadows on the flowers. People have been asking me how long it takes me to do a painting so I am keeping track of the hours on this one. It is 21x28" and this small portion of the painting took me two hours. I am trying to lay down the shadows dark enough the first time so I don't have to go back and add another layer.
Wave 2 Has a New Face
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/11/16
I reworked 'Big Wave 2' and like it much better. Besides changing the foam for the cascading wave, I lightened the sky so that the wave would stand out more. The advantage of oil paint (versus watercolor) is that changes can be easily made by painting over it.) This 16x20" oil painting has been sold!
Plumerias in Paradise Sketch
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/09/16
I have combined a few of my photos of the white Singapore plumeria to make a pleasing composition. I will transfer the drawing to the watercolor paper and since the lines there will be faint, I am sharing the sketch so you have a point of reference. Feel free to ask questions anytime by using the Request Information link on the left. I will be finishing Waves 4 and 2 at the same time and then will work on this watercolor painting exclusively. Size of this painting will be 21x28." I will call this one 'Plumerias in Paradise' for now since I have several other 'white plumeria' paintings.

Wave 4, Wave 2, and Back to Watercolor Plumerias
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/08/16
Note: I will be going back to painting watercolors as I finish the two waves in oils. (Will do Waves 3, and 4 down the road.) My next watercolor will be white plumerias, 21x28."
Added more to Wave 4 and am in the process of painting the sides of the canvas so that it can be hung unframed. When dry, I will be able to look at it with fresh eyes and tweak it where needed including more of a reflection of the clouds on the water at the right. I have gone further toward turquoise on the water to reflect Hawaii ocean colors.
I am going to change the right side of Wave 2 so have blocked out the big splash on the far right. I also have more of an angle on the inside of the curling wave.
Wave 4 Makapu'u
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/07/16
Almost done with Wave 4 Makapu'u. I will probably have more reflection on the ocean of the sunlit clouds in the sky on the right.. Added more turquoise to the background ocean to reflect ocean colors in Hawaii.
Wave 4 Continued
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/05/16
I added a couple of islands, Rabbit Island on Oahu and the smaller flat one in front of it. These islands are in front of Makapu'u Beach. Also changed the sky. Did a little work on the foam. Will wait till it dries a little before going back to it. I did not do anything to the cresting wave so the photo could be better. Refer to the photo below for truer colors.
Chasing a Duck and Painting Wave 4
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/28/16
Made a couple trips to my elder client's house to scare off/catch a Muscovy duck who has decided that her lanai would make a great home. That duck flew away as high as the second story of a home down the road when I chased it off It has returned each time over the past few days. Hoping to catch and transport. Stay tuned.
I did work on Wave 4. Will concentrate on the foam next and touch up the background waves.
Wave 4
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/26/16
I have made the transparent area of the cresting wave lighter and also added an approaching wave behind the main one to give this depth.
Wave 4
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/25/16
Letting Wave 4 cut in line. Lots more to do with this oil painting. It is 11x14" and on
canvas. I posted the first photo of ths painting on 9/11.
Wave Prints
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/23/16
I am leaning toward offering only small 8x11 and 5x7 matted prints in my Etsy.com shop of the waves. I ordered prints using my own photo as a test. Bigger ones involve hiring a professional photographer. The original paintings will be available by contacting me and may eventually go on sale in the Etsy shop if not sold privately. The oil paintings of big waves will primarily be 11x14" in size although 'Big Wave 2' is 16x20". Prices and terms will be discussed privately. I price by size of painting. My first big wave print is in the Etsy shop now at
www.paintingsbymarcia.etsy.com.
Another Fair in Princeville Tomorrow!
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/23/16
I love the fair location at the Church of the Pacific in Princeville. It has lots of windows so is well lit and I get to place a few paintings on top of the piano behind me. Good vibes here. We will be open from 8 to 2 on Saturday, August 24. I will be at the Coconut Festival in Kapaa next weekend, October 1(9to5) and 2(10 to 4). Lots of festivities with song, dance, food, and vendors!
Wave 2 Complete
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/22/16
I am calling 'Big Wave 2' done.for now. Will go back and paint the sides of the canvas when the front is dry so that it can be hung without a frame if preferred.
Waves 2, 3, and 5
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/19/16
All are in progress although 2 is almost done. I like the simplicity of colors of Wave 3 so probably won't do much more on that wave.

The Changing Face of Wave 2
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/18/16
I wanted more of the foam action in the painting rather than on the far right so moved the cresting wave left a little. Decided to concentrate on finishing one painting at a time so have not moved on to Waves 3,4,and 5 after all.
FYI 'Daisy Wilcox A Bee's Perspective' now in the Print Gallery
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/15/16
I have the 'Bee's Perspective' in the gallery called 'Other Plumerias' on this website. The original is available. Size is approx. 21x28 and I will have it at the craft fair on Saturday at the Veteran's Center in Lihue from 8 to 2 and in Princeville at the Church of the Pacific on the 24th, same hours.
Wave 2 -Taking a Rest
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/15/16
It is probably a good idea to take a few days off from completing Wave 2 to get a fresh look. Will move on to one of the other 3 waves. Here is where I am leaving Wave 2.
Wave 2 Continued
by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/14/16
Made some changes to Wave 2. The sky is darker. And since I probably won't have a surfer to show how large the wave is in comparison, I added a hint of land in the background. I will probably define that more so that the wave looks immense. I painted over some of the foam at the top of the wave to change the contour so I will need to work a bit more on the foam when the paint dries a little. (Better photo this morning in case you viewed this entry earlier.)
