Underwater Kauai Turtles In

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 11/19/19

I have added two turtles and will be moving on to the fish. Will add color later. I am using underwater photo references from Wilson Barrett and am very excited about painting the fish next!

Underwater Kauai

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 11/15/19

Started with the first glazes of the ocean bottom. Will have two turtles instead of one for balance.  They will be roughed in next. I am looking forward to painting the school of fish. The challenge will be to show depth of the fish in the water.

New Turtle Watercolor

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 11/13/19

Wilson Barrett has given me permission to use his wonderful underwater photos for my next and future painting projects. I am going to merge these two for the first.  I am especially excited about the school of fish. The composition below is comprised of a grouping of sketches and may change.

'Red Hibiscus' is Done!

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 11/07/19

The "Red Hibiscus' turned out pretty nicely. There will be prints on this website and at my Etsy shop, paintingsbymarcia.etsy.com in a few weeks.

Original is 18 x 24".

Darker Red for the Hibiscus

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 11/04/19

I am painting the hibiscus a darker red to be in balance with the dark shadows on the leaves.

Red Hibiscus So Far

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 11/03/19

I added some shadows and will need to go darker on some petals and do more work on the background.

Single Red Hibiscus

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/29/19

So far. . .

PS Will post the last wave photo after the original is back from the photographer.

Waves at Dawn

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/22/19

Another watercolor wave painting in the works. It is a good rest after painting the flower details in "Lei Rainbow Plumeria".

Nebel's Rainbow Almost Done 22x30"

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/17/19

I will go darker with the buds on the left and define edges where needed. Then off to the photographer tomorrow for future prints.

I am calling this one "Lei Rainbow Plumeria."

Nebel's Rainbow Before the Background

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/13/19

I am ready to put in a darker background and will probably need another layer of flower color afterwards.

Nebel's Rainbow Continued

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/05/19

Will be moving on to the buds next and then finally, to the leaves.

Another Nebel's/Lei Rainbow Started

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 10/03/19

The last plumeria painting was a commission.  I am back into plumeria mode and am painting another of the same plumeria variety.

Nebel's Rainbow is Done!

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/27/19

I am often asked how long it takes me to finish a painting.  I kept track of this one for fun and it took 43 hours. Of course, I was using 5 different reference photos and am not likely to do that again.  Light was coming from different directions for one thing and I had to make adjustments.

Anyway, this one was a commission and the buyer liked the composition from my original Nebel's painting 6 years ago!
I will be painting another one or two of the Nebel's/Lei Rainbow plumerias and it should go faster.

Nebel's Rainbow Background

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/20/19

Making good progress with the background. I will eventually have to darken the flowers because they now seem very pale against the green leaves.

Nebel's Rainbow Starting Leaves

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/17/19

I painted some leaves lightly to see the composition in paint. More leaves will go in the background later.

Nebel's Rainbow Buds

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/13/19

Not moving along so quickly. (Have been helping an elder client transition from Rehab.)

Craft fair at the Church of the Pacific in Princeville tomorrow from 8 to 2. Drop in if you are on Kauai.
I am liking the look of these buds and will darken the flowers and perhaps start on the leaves to see where shadows should land.

Back to Plumerias - Nebel's (Lei) Rainbow

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/09/19

This one will be 22 x 30". Nice to get back to plumeria after many koi, wave, and Kauai landscape paintings. (Small prints for those are on paintingsbymarcia.etsy.com). Starting light with the flowers. Composition is from 5 photos of this variety so will add shadows later so everything makes sense.

Koi Frenzy is Done

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 09/06/19

It was a roller coaster ride with this one with all of those fish. A few got deleted and the water color changed midway. I got rid of most of the masking fluid dots which were distracting after the mask was removed.

Koi Frenzy in Progress

by Marcia Minnichhofer on 08/21/19

I have several feeding frenzy koi photos and decided it was time for a challenge. Let's see how this one developes.

'3 Koi' is Done! 16x20"

Time to move on from the '3 Koi' watercolor.
